Welcome
G'day and welcome to the website of our extended Blackwell family focussing on the descendants of George Blackwell who arrived in Northern Tasmania in 1855 aboard the clipper Lightning (see right). A number of us are carrying out research into our family history and will use this site to pull the information together. If you would like to contribute to this site, please use the Login option to create an account.
Whilst the focus of this site is the Blackwell family, it also has information on:
- McGaw
- Wotton
- Margetts
- Burnard and
- Fawssett
You can also find more information at our MyHeritage site.
Why?
"Why investigate our family tree?" I hear many people ask and I have three reasons I generally give them.
- History is brought alive when you can place your family in the midst of past events. My research has led me to read the Battalion War Diaries from World War I which have been all the more poignant knowing the link to my family.
- I have gained an appreciation of the sacrifice made by my forebears that has led to the life I enjoy today. Life in the early days of European settlement was extremely hard with injury and death common risks taken to carve out a home.
- By understanding my heritage I get a better understanding of who I am. My life today is the culmination of generations before me and I try to emulate the better qualities of my ancestors and I try to avoid the errors made along the way.
